How to Search Census Records for Free
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately EasyThings You’ll Need:
- Library card
Begin by calling your local library or checking the library website. You'll need to find out if the library offers access to an online genealogy database called Heritage Quest or a similar service. If the answer is yes, grab your library card, log on and start your free census search.
Step2
When a local public library doesn't provide genealogy database access, a college or university library may be the solution. Check to see if the academic library closest to you offers access to the census online or on microfilm. If so, ask if the public can access the census records. Usually, the answer is yes, especially if the library is a local federal depository.
Step3
If you still haven't been able to find free census record access, you'll need to head to church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has the index for the 1880 United States, the 1881 British Isles and the 1881 Canadian census records on its site. If you want to see the actual record, you can go to one of the many Family History Centers throughout the world and request census records on microfilm. They will order them from the main library, but they do charge a postage fee for microfilm loans.
